Wednesday 31st May – travel and met first Grandson, Arlo George for the
first time – what a star:)
Thursday 1st June 2017 – Bike ***** Godalming to Guildford – sunny
21.27 miles, out 6hrs 30 mins, 18.48 kts max.
Starting the day at Sayers Croft and planning to cycle along the River Wey
to Guildford to visit Rob Hannah and the baby, we went to Godalming and
eventually found somewhere to park. It was a bit difficult because all the
car parks are pay and all the private residents have got notices
everywhere!! Eventually found a good layby not far out of town towards the
very posh Charterhouse school. We whizzed down the hill and joined the
River Wey path at the Meadow Park where lots of people were having a break
from the office and eating their lunch in the sunshine:) We approached
Godalming wharf on the wrong side of the river for the path but it was nice
to see the narrow boats and old buildings. Back to the right side of the
river for a wonderful cycle along the tow path past Farncombe boat house
where they hire out narrow boats for the day! Then all the way into
Guildford. It was green and lush and totally beautiful! We stopped at
Unstead lock for our lunch. The locks are really old and in really good
condition – no automated electric machinery here. You have to push the
huge wooden bar to open the gates and I couldn’t resist having a go even
though no boats in sight at that point!! When we got to Guildford we went
up the steep hill to the old clock which extends out over the road and
found the tourist information nearby to pick up a couple of maps. Further
up the hill to Guildford Castle keep where we had a few too many liquorice
sweets!! Back down to the river to continue north of Guildford past lots
of houses on the other bank with gardens right down to the water. There
were a couple of swans with 4 signets on the bank in someone’s garden :)
We also stopped to watch a completely mad dog chasing a ball into the
water, taking off at a running jump and belly flopping really hard into the
water and swimming out to get it before returning to do it time and time
again – must have made him sore!! We carried on until we got to Stoke
Lock. After a short rest and a phone chat with Rob we returned to
Guildford and found our way up to the Royal Surrey Hospital to visit Rob
Hannah and our new Grandson:) Very Happy to say that Hannah’s health is
much improved today and the baby is as GORGEOUS as ever. Had lots of
cuddles and chat before returning to the bikes and making our way back to
the van on a glorious evening where people were canoeing and rowing on the
river, sitting by their narrow boats drinking wine and eating and passing a
huge number of joggers! We returned to Sayers Croft for a snack tea and
bed:)
